Jump Lists
New in Windows 7, Jump Lists take you right to the documents, pictures, songs, or websites you turn to each day. To open a Jump List, just right-click a program icon on the Windows 7 taskbar. (You'll also find them on the Start menu.) What you see in a Jump List depends entirely on the program. The Jump List for Internet Explorer 8 shows frequently-viewed websites. Windows Media Player 12 lists commonly-played tunes. Your Jump List missing a favorite? You can "pin" whatever files you like there. Jump Lists don't just show shortcuts to files. Sometimes they also provide quick access to commands for things like composing new e‑mail messages or playing music.

Improved Windows Taskbar
In Windows 7 you can "pin" favorite programs anywhere on the taskbar for easy access. Not crazy about the icon lineup? Now you can rearrange them any way you like by clicking and dragging. Finally, there are new ways to preview windows. Point to a taskbar icon to see a thumbnail preview of open files or programs. Then, move your mouse over a thumbnail to preview the window full-screen. You can even close windows from the thumbnail previews--a big time saver.

Snap
Ever need to cut through a cluttered desktop and quickly focus on a single window? Just click a pane and give your mouse a shake. Every open window except that one instantly disappears. Jiggle again--and your windows are back.

Which version of Windows 7 is Best for You?

Energy Efficient Intel Pentium Processor

Offering the latest in ultra-low voltage processing power, the dual-core Intel Pentium SU4100 has a has a power consumption rating of just 10 watts and a 1.3 GHz speed that's paired with a fast 800 MHz front-side bus (FSB) and 2 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)

Designed for use in ultra-thin laptops to balance the competing needs of high performance with battery consumption, the Pentium SU4100 features Intel SpeedStep technology, helping your system to dynamically adjust processor voltage and core frequency to decrease power consumption and heat production. It also comes with built-in Execute Disable Bit technology, which helps keep your laptop safe from viruses, worms, and other malicious attacks.

The Multi-Gestured Acer Timeline

A Multi-Gesture Touchpad allows you to pinch, flick and swirl your fingers across the touchpad for more natural photo and video viewing as well as intuitive navigation of websites. The Multi-Gesture Touchpad enables you to scroll, zoom in and out and flip through web pages, photos, spreadsheets and more.

The TouchPad can also be disabled with a one-touch button, eliminating accidental cursor movement with palms and wrists when using an external mouse.

Cool to the Touch

The Acer Timeline notebook series includes Acer's ComfyTouch technology, which uses an innovative Laminar Wall Jet Engine design to air-cool the processor and notebook case. Even when running for a full day the notebook remains cool in your hands or on your lap.

Easy Backup for Peace of Mind

The Timeline family of notebooks also includes a backup button that lets you easily select and protect your irreplaceable digital files through regular scheduled backups or on an as-needed basis. Data can be backed up to an external hard drive, flash card, thumb drive or to a secure hidden partition on their PC.

Extended Battery Life via Low Power Components and Acer's PowerSmart Features

While most notebooks with long battery life use higher cell batteries which protrude from the back of the notebook, Acer combined numerous low power components with a standard high-capacity 6-cell battery, allowing them to keep the design as small as possible.

In addition, a conveniently located PowerSmart button located above the keyboard allows you to easily extend battery life. A simple press of the button activates the advanced power savings settings, traditionally a tedious procedure accessed through numerous software-based steps. This one-button approach simplifies the process.

Lastly, an Acer PowerSmart adapter senses when the notebook is unplugged, and stops sending needless energy. It also stops pulling power from the wall outlet when the adapter is full. The PowerSmart adapter saves 1752 watts of energy a year--equivalent to lighting a 15-watt (65W equivalent) light bulb for 116 days.

"Why do I still give it a 5 star review?" 2010-07-24
By E. Lin (USA)
I am not going to repeat what was mentioned in the other reviews. First mine was from Costco 4810TX-4120, not an exact model but I believe everything is exactly the same except it is a single core CPU. I own 3 companies and I have purchased at least 10 laptops and maintain them over the years so I think this will be a fair comparison. Applications wise I am not big on games, just surfing, MSword, Excel, Photoshop, Illustrator, Corel Draw and Autocad which all run great. I don't do games but I have a Real Flight v5 and the video logs, so I don't think the video card is fast enough for gamers. The DVD player broke after about 8 month of usage. Device manager failed even after drive is rediscovered and driver was reloaded. Bought an external DVD and the same thing, so I think something is wrong either the motherboard or Windows 7. I am afraid to reload the backup because I have way too much data and application on it and I can not live a hour without it. Why do I still give it a 5 star, because it fits my needs like a glove. Plenty fast for my applications, super thin/ light and extremely long battery life. The HP and some of the other laptop, either the screen is too small, too heavy or too bulky. This is the thinnest and lightest lap with DVD player. Since I am a heavy computer user, I can't live a day without it so I bought the 4810TX-4508 model while mine is being send back for repair. I will only mention the pros and cons others have not mentioned. I am extremely particular and a heavy user so you know this machine is excellent and why I am sticking to buying a second one despite of the DVD/CD drive failure.

Cons
DVD door release button in above the keyboard and I have to open the laptop screen to access the button in removing my DVD/CD.
Took me a while to figure out the ethernet light above the keyboard is actually a switch to turn the wireless hardware on and off.
Bluetooth adapter is very hard to find for Win 7. I bought 4 different brand before finding one that actually works and it was the most expensive one for like $50 that has Win7 compatible in the spec. The only Bluetooth driver that works with this Win 7 machine is the driver written by Toshiba which came with the bluetooth dongle I purchased. Bluetooth is very import to me as I will only use the best bluetooth mouse since I need the range.
Each time I unplug the power or any USB device the machine would wake up from sleep. Kind of annoying but all I have to do is to hit the sleep button again. May be only specific to my model only. Oh, I did try to adjust all the power options and no matter what it would do that, something I have to remember.
Double clicking the mouse pad will only work if I tab it on the left side of the mouse pad, not right side, so the sensitivity is not enough on the right side. I tried to adjust it but still the same problem. Not a big deal I got use to it.
My Fujitsu 7020 laptop DVD drive also broke but that was after about twice the life span of this one. So I would say Acer's quality is average not excellent. Given the price and the feature it is well worth it.
Windows 7 required me to upgrade many of my application software and I spend about $800 for that. This is a Win 7 problem not a computer problem but it is something you have to deal with when you buy this machine. Again since I am a very heavy user (12 hours a day on this laptop) the upgrade was well worth it. Windows 7 is a lot better than my XP in terms of features and reliability. I don't get adwares as much as on Win XP.

Pros
Everything that was mentioned in the reviews that over cast the cons by far. You can not buy a 14 inch laptop this thin and this light and extremely long hours of battery. It is soooo good I am buying a second one for backup.
One time, it woke up from sleep after I removed a USB device and was zipped shut my carrying bag. About 3 hours later, I was shocked that it was still running and was just a little hot. It did not catch fire, melt down or need to auto thermo shutdown. The reason I think this laptop has the 6 hours battery life is because it is energy efficient running ice cold at all times. It runs the coolest with the longest battery life among the all ones I have purchased.
Every laptop has its flaws, I own so many of them. So my 5 star rating is done by comparing all of the ones I own.

 "Solid Choice" 2010-05-07
By A. Ellis (Albuquerque, NM USA)
Pros: I've had this laptop for about six months now, and I can definitely say it was a good buy. The 4810t is thin, but substantial, and well built. The chassis resists fingerprints and is very durable. Depending on how it's used, the 8-hour battery life claim is well within reach; my uses are for light gaming, audio editing, and word processing and I get a consistent five hours out of it. And yes, despite the seemingly low specs, this laptop is capable of *very* light gaming. With a little tweaking (but no overclocking) Dragon Age: Origins is playable at lowest settings; quite an achievement for an ultraportable with this efficiency. Of course, older games like Diablo II and Quake 3 run fine. What it cannot play is modern first-person shooters. But this laptop isn't built for that, anyway. Also, the Timeline easily plays 1080p video, as well as exporting it to external monitors via HDMI. Very high demand audio processing will make it stutter, but this will not be a problem for most people.

Wireless performance is excellent; the range is exceptional compared to most older laptops that only carry 802.11g. The keyboard has decent travel and little flex, but attracts fingerprints. The touchpad takes a little getting used to but once you're accustomed to it, it becomes very enjoyable to use. The touch-buttons at the top of the keyboard could be a little more responsive, but they were a good addition. Webcam is well placed and works great.

And the laptop is a joy to look at. When closed it has a very refined and sleek look; there is a nice charging light visible in the front that changes from orange to blue when the battery is fully charged.

Cons: No switchable graphics. Certain models of the Timeline are available with this feature, but they are dramatically more expensive. Still, it would be nice to have. The screen is of an acceptable resolution, but tends to develop uneven lighting if not handled carefully. A major thing to watch out for: my laptop was dropped about a foot onto carpet, and the resulting shock dislocated the DVD drive apparatus. It is still usable, but must be pulled out manually when ejected.

Speakers lack good bass reproduction, but that is to be expected from an ultraportable.

Other options: If you're willing to extend your budget about $100, the ASUS UL80vt is an excellent alternative. It's a little heavier, but has a better CPU and switchable graphics for about $750.

Conclusion: It's a good laptop, overall. There are a few features that could have been included (something like ASUS's Turbo33 would have been amazing) but for the price it's difficult to beat this value. Four stars.

 "Great computer!!!!!" 2010-04-03
By B. DESAI (CT)
I had an acer that had a HORRIBLE battery life and eventually, after only 2 years of use, it stopped charging altogether. The charger that came with the computer no longer gave the computer life so I had to borrow a friends charger (he once had an Acer that did the exact same thing), which may I add was too big to fit into my computer so I had to hold it in with a pen propping it up. Needless to say, when the charger crapped out last week, I decided it was time for a new computer.

I was really hesitant at first to get another Acer, but after doing tonssssssssss of research and consulting with my engineer sister, we decided this computer was the way to go. I ordered it on [...] (very fast shipping and got it for under $600), and it came a day before it was scheduled it in mint condition. I still need to play around with it more to see all it can do, but so far I LOVE it. It has this really sleek look to it, veryyyyy light, and the keyboard is awesome. I thought the one panel click bar would be a pain, but it's not at all. As for the battery life, so far I've seen it last 6 hours but thats when the battery wasn't charged a complete 100%. I'm confident I can get at least 7, if not more. It's great. The internet is giving me some issues but that's just a matter of fixing the settings.

So far so good, but it's only been a day. I'll comment more in a few months :)

 "Incredible notebook value" 2010-03-26
By Picky User (Philadelphia)
I just picked up this machine from the MS Store for an incredible $458; 4 GB RAM, 320 HDD, Win 7. (The price has now gone up to $650 )

I've mostly used Dells in the past, and was looking for a replacement for my X1 (which I love, but the battery is shot, and even a refurbished replacement is around $200 because the machine is from 2005). That notebook was around 3lbs, so I wanted something light, but with a full size keyboard, wrist rest, and a slightly larger screen (the X1 was 12")

I could not be happier with the Acer. The screen is truly incredible, like watching a high def TV. I would prefer two buttons on the trackpad (as the X1 had) but I am getting used to the single button. The display-mounted wireless antenna is a great plus, and the reception seems excellent.

In terms of performance, I'm coming from a an XP machine that had just 1 GB of RAM, so naturally virtually any new computer will seem fast, but the Acer is an excellent performer. I like Win 7 thus far.

The machine just feels amazingly solid and well made for the price. I honestly don't know how they make money with a price this low. Also, some have commented on the sound from the speakers. I think it's fine. With headphones though, it's great. The fan is very quiet and the battery life thus far is very, very good. Minimum 5 hours, and I've gotten more, though I've not tried playing a full movie yet. Oh,and yes, the keyboard shows fingerprints. Big deal, just wipe it off. The chicklet keys also take some adjustment but I'm getting used to them.

Would I like a SLIGHTLY lighter machine? Yes. I was considering the Toshiba Satellite T135D-S1326 13.3-inch Notebook that was under 4lbs, but it was more money. And what one reviewer said it true: you really don't need the power brick, except perhaps if you're playing DVDs or traveling.

Considering I paid over $2000(!) for my Dell X1 in July 2005, the fact that I can get a notebook this good for under $500 is just amazing. Why anyone would pay $200 for a handcuffed netbook when they could get a machine like this is beyond me.

"Spent more time in repair than in use!" 2010-03-13
By Tanner (NJ USA)
I got this laptop for Christmas and it worked well for a month!
Then the keyboard started acting funny and computer kept turning on and off by itself!
Had to send it back for repairs where they replaced the keyboard and some other stuff.
Got it back and it wouldn't boot up. Literally sent it back to repair place in Texas the
same day I got it back from there!

Was in repair for 2 weeks. Just got it back and they replaced the main board!
So I've got a new computer except for the hard drive!
Probably just had a lemon, but I wish I had gotten something else!
Keep waiting for something else to go wrong!
